Are You At Risk for Glaucoma?

Did you know that glaucoma is one of the leading causes of vision loss, affecting about 3 million people in the United States? Did you also know that the disease does not affect everyone in the same way? Its symptoms, which are rarely noticeable in the early stages, can lead to vision loss if they are ignored.

Regular screenings are the best defense in treating glaucoma from its onset. This is why so many eye care practitioners stress annual eye exams, especially if you are at an increased risk of glaucoma. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Mayo Clinic, below are some of the risk factors for glaucoma:

•  Having diabetes are twice as likely to get glaucoma

•  Those who are over age 40 (risk increases for those over 60)

•   Being severely nearsighted

•   Having a family history of glaucoma

•   Corneas that are thin in the center

•   Eye injuries or certain types of eye surgery

•  Taking corticosteroid medications, especially eye drops, for a long time.

Because the disease usually progresses slowly and may only affect peripheral or side vision, you may not notice it until central vision (the vision you use to read, drive or watch TV) is impacted. By then, it may be too late to reverse.

Our licensed eye doctors treat hundreds of patients with glaucoma. Early diagnosis is the best weapon for preventing complete vision loss. Glaucoma is typically treated with eye drops, but advanced cases may require surgery.

Family Vision Center is taking the opportunity during January’s Glaucoma Awareness to let people know that with a comprehensive eye exam, glaucoma can be diagnosed and treated and complete vision loss prevented.  Contact us today to schedule your next eye exam.
