Protect Your Eyes From Nine to Five and Beyond

Whether you’re working remotely or are back to the office, it’s likely that you are spending more time in front of screens. You may be experiencing eye strain, headaches, or dry eye, and are concerned about permanent damage to your vision. In recognition of Workplace Eye Wellness Month, here are a few tips on how to create a comfortable work environment and prevent digital eye strain.

What Is Digital Eye Strain?

Digital eye strain is a group of eye problems that happens when we stare at a screen for too long. Blurry vision, headaches, and tired, dry eyes are some of the symptoms. Because we tend to blink less while staring at our screens, our eyes are not as moisturized. Screen time is not the only cause. Long periods of reading, writing or other intensive near work can also cause eye strain.

“While the increased time spent on digital screens will not cause permanent damage to your vision, it may contribute to multiple symptoms of eye strain,” Dr. Helen Ambizas, Optometrist, Family Vision Center said. “Many people find relief for their eye strain symptoms by using an anti-reflective coating on their glasses.“

1. Take a break.

The simple actions of taking twenty seconds every twenty minutes to look away from your screen. Look outside or look at something far away to “break” the near-vision focus.

2. Ergonomic Eyes

Ensure that you are sitting at least eighteen to twenty-five inches from your screen. Be sure to adjust your screen’s brightness and contrast for comfort. Place your screen in a position that causes your eyes to look slightly downward, not straight up.

3. Artificial tears.

To keep your eyes moist throughout the day, over the counter eye drops can be extremely helpful. Of course, if dry eye persists, contact your eye doctor. Adding a humidifier to your workspace can also minimize dryness.

4. Computer glasses.

If you struggle to see your screen, you may need computer glasses, which are specifically designed for focusing on computer screens. Keep in mind that the American Academy of Ophthalmology does not recommend blue light-blocking glasses, due to lack of scientific evidence that blue light coming causes digital eye strain or damages the eye.
