Orthokeratology or CRT (corneal refractive therapy) is an FDA-approved process that has been available for more than twenty years. By wearing specially designed and fitted contact lenses through the night, the cornea is re-shaped and the effects of nearsightedness may be potentially reversed. Studies have also shown that orthokeratology can slow down the progression of myopia.
According to the American Ophthalmology Association, “vision improvements are reversible but can be maintained if you keep wearing the lenses as directed.” Patients are usually able to attain 20/20 vision within a few days of starting treatment.
After a comprehensive eye exam, the patient wears the contact lenses through the night every night. During this time, the contact lenses alter the thickness of the cornea. Upon waking, the contacts are removed. During the day, the patient will not require glasses or contacts to see distance.
To maintain their vision, the patient must continue to wear the contacts every night. Otherwise, their corneas will return to its normal shape and thickness and nearsightedness returns. It is important for patients to practice good eye hygiene to avoid any complications or eye infections.
Costs include the initial fitting and eye exam along with replacement lenses as needed until optimal vision is obtained. Since ortho-k is likely an elective treatment for most patients, it may not be covered by insurance. Patients should consult with their insurance company for details.
Ortho-k can only be performed by a licensed doctor who specializes in the process. To determine if you are a good candidate, schedule a consultation with Dr. Sean West who is available in both our Stratford and Bridgeport eye care centers. Contact us today to learn more.
