The Importance of Pediatric Eye Exams

Eye exams for children are an important part of monitoring eye health and development, as well as detecting any potential vision challenges. At Family Vision Center in Stratford and Bridgeport, our eye doctors provide quality eye care for even our youngest patients.

What To Expect

Each exam begins with the child’s eye being measured by a variety of machines.  None of these touch the eye, but are able to take very precise measurements. Patients are only required to look at a picture and sit still for a short time. After this, the technician will perform a standard eye exam.

The standard eye exam is what is most familiar to people. Your child will read a few letters from a chart. If your child is not familiar enough with the alphabet to read the letters, just let the technician know. An alternate eye exam chart using pictures can be used.

If a vision problem is detected, the eye doctor will use another machine to test different lens strengths and configurations to find the right prescription for the child. This machine may look intimidating, but it's really nothing more than a big series of magnifying glasses. It will never touch your child's eyes. In fact, most children love to play with the equipment, and our eye doctors will take the time to show them how it works.
