The Necessity of Regular Contact Lens Evaluations

Did you know that contact lenses are not just a fashion accessory, but a medical device? Renewing your prescription is only a part of the process. Your eyes' health is crucial: Doctors need to assess the health of your eyes and identify any potential damage caused by your contact lenses. Your eyes are unique, and their well-being is our priority.

Let’s discuss the difference between a contact lens fitting and evaluation:

Contact Lens Fitting

A contact lens fitting is typically for a first time contact lens wearer or someone being fit for a new brand of contact lenses. Your eye care professional ensures your lenses not only fit well but also contribute to your best vision.

A proper evaluation considers the lens's size, shape, and design parameters. A typical fitting includes all eye measurements and required testing, a personalized tutorial of the insertion and removal of the contact lenses with a licensed technician, a trial pair of contact lenses and a follow up with the doctor (usually 2 weeks later).

First time wearers (and sometimes those being refitted) are required to return for a contact lens follow up visit within two weeks after their initial fitting.

Contact Lens Evaluation

A contact lens evaluation is for someone who is an existing contact lens wearer. Yearly evaluations are required by law because contacts are a medical device. During this visit, the doctor will evaluate the eye and check the fitting of the contact lens. There may be additional tests needed as applicable or recommended by the optometrists.

Save money in the long run: A well-fitted lens prevents discomfort and potential problems, saving you from buying replacements due to poor fit. It's an investment in your eye health and your pocket!
